Habitat
Deciduous woods, leaf litter, compost; saprotrophic on soil.
Season
September–November
Verified

Identification

Lilac to violet cap, gills and stem — all tinted; the smell is characteristic (orange blossom/anise). In leaf litter and compost-rich ground.

Edibility — conditional

Edible cooked; some people react to it raw. The lilac color fades with age — young fruit bodies are clearest.

How not to confuse it

  • Deadly webcaps can share the violet shade: webcaps show a rusty spore print and cortina remnants — blewit's print is pale pink.
  • Any violet "blewit" with rusty spores = discard.
