Identification

Whitish-brown cap, pale clay gills turning rusty, a stem with a violet tinge and a faint ring zone — remnants of the cortina.

Edibility

Edible and collected late in the season when little else remains.

In practice

  • Cortinarius has poisonous members (see the fool's webcap) — the violet stem and bog habitat are the safe markers.
