Identification

Large umbrella-cap with brown scales on white, snakeskin-patterned stem, a movable ring, white flesh that doesn't change color.

Edibility

A choice edible — cap only; the stem is woody. Fried like a schnitzel is classic.

In practice — the key rule

  • Take only large, opened parasols (cap 10 cm+): the deadly fatal dapperling is a small lookalike with an amatoxin load.
  • Small scaly "parasols" = never.
