Identification

White round fruit bodies on soil; inside — uniform white gleba. Any "puffball" that isn't pure white inside is not eaten.

Edibility — conditional

Edible young and white; once the gleba turns olive or marbled — discard. The one-knife-cut rule applies.

How not to confuse it

  • Dark inside → earthball.
  • An immature amanita button inside an "egg" — always slice vertically before cooking.
