Habitat
Living and dead hardwoods — oak, cherry, willow; large overlapping shelves.
Season
May–October
Verified

Identification

Bright orange-yellow overlapping shelves on wood; underside yellow-pored, no gills.

Edibility — conditional

Edible young and well-cooked — the "chicken" texture. But documented: GI reactions in some people, and reports of toxicity from shelves grown on conifers and eucalyptus. Allergic-type reactions are in the literature.

In practice

  • Young soft edges only; cook thoroughly.
  • On conifer/eucalyptus — skip it; on hardwoods, small first portion.
