Identification

Brown to gray-brown cap with white warts, white gills, a ring and a volva at the base. Looks like a dull fly agaric — and like the edible blusher, which makes it dangerous.

Why it is dangerous

The same ibotenic acid + muscimol as the fly agaric, but in higher concentrations — poisonings run harder: marked delirium, agitation, seizures, deep sleep, occasional deaths. Onset 30 min – 3 h.

How not to confuse it

Feature Panther cap Blusher
Flesh on cut unchanged turns pink-red
Warts white, orderly grayish, irregular
Volva smooth rim ragged
