Identification

Brown slimy cap (peels off when cooked), yellowish pores, ring on the stem in S. luteus. Grows under pines in troops from early summer.

Edibility

Edible after removing the slimy cap skin — the skin causes digestive upset. Good fried and marinated.

In practice

  • Slippery skin + ring + under pine = Suillus; peel the cap.
  • The grainy suillus (S. granulatus) has no ring.
