Habitat
Poor soils — conifer and deciduous woods, heaths; mycorrhizal.
Season
June–November

Identification

Small pinkish-tan caps, thick widely-spaced waxy gills with a pink tone; the look varies hugely with humidity — hence "the deceiver."

Edibility

Edible but small and thin-fleshed — a survival-food grade edible rather than a prize.

In practice

  • Pinkish + waxy sparse gills + poor soil = laccaria.
  • Given the modest value and the similar toxic small browns — mostly a species to know, not to harvest.
