Identification

An amanita — volva at the base, ring — but unmistakable: smooth orange cap, yellow gills and stem (white in other amanitas).

Edibility

A prized edible of southern Europe — historically the dish of Roman emperors.

In practice

  • Volva + orange cap + YELLOW gills/stem = Caesar's.
  • In the north — rare and listed; don't take doubtful amanitas.
