Identification

Like a porcini but under pine and usually earlier: cap darker, wine-red-brown; stem with a white net; flesh white, unchanging.

Edibility

Fully edible, same culinary uses as porcini.

In practice

  • In pine forests it often comes weeks before the main porcini wave.
  • Same lookalike checks: pink tubes → bitter bolete; red pores → discard.
